Doc’s Banjos are designed with the “frailer” or “clawhammer” banjo player in mind.  Although we do offer an internal resonator banjo, most of what we build are open-back banjos.

At the onset of building banjos I came across a very old banjo bridge that was handmade.  It still had the whittling marks and it was a bit irregular but beautiful.  It was a moment in time that made me think of the unknown maker, it made me think of the time and effort, and how it stood the test of time, and made me really appreciate the quality and charm of handcrafted products.

It is unusual to find truly “handcrafted” work in any products.  Taking it one step further, why not serve the “old-time” banjo players out there by making a custom banjo that has features you have always wanted…or introduce ideas that you thought were always good but never could find.

We are building heirloom quality handmade banjos, with an extensive list of innovative options.  As a builder, there is nothing quite like building a tailor made banjo and building every banjo as an individual.  In fact, I probably would not have the passion for building, if it was any other way.

The fundamental concept of “anatomy and physiology” as applied to wood and sound is the fundamental premise that guides our construction and design.

Our banjos can be seen at music related events, at our workshop near Dallas Oregon, or at Troubadour Music Center in Corvallis Oregon, Dusty Strings Music in Seattle Washington and Elderly Instruments in Lansing Michigan.

Our Mission Statement

to build a banjo that offers a superb sound quality, looks beautiful, is a delight to hold and play and will become a treasure for generations to come".
